What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a hands-on healing art originating in Japan and informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is based on a holistic understanding of how our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are interconnected and influenced by our environment and how we live.
Our state of health and wellbeing is understood in terms of our Ki (life force / energy) being more or less in balance. Shiatsu works with the body’s natural propensity for health. It uses touch, gentle manipulation and stretches to encourage a healthy, balanced flow of Ki through the receiver.
Each treatment is different as the shiatsu practitioner responds to the receiver’s needs and current state of being. When you choose to receive shiatsu you give yourself the time and space to reconnect with yourself in a way that can offer new self awareness and understanding.

A Shiatsu treatment:
A Shiatsu session usually involves the receiver lying on a futon (Japanese mattress) although Shiatsu can be received whilst seated on a chair if this is better for the individual. Working primarily through their hands (or sometimes with their elbows, knees or feet), the practitioner works around the receiver in a systematic manner moving along the energy channels of the body (meridians) and connecting with acupressure points. Relaxed pressure, gentle manipulation and stretches are applied to the legs, torso, arms and head. The receiver remains fully clothed throughout.
My standard session lasts approximately one hour. The first session will include a consultation concerning the receiver’s health, life style and reasons for choosing to receive Shiatsu.
Why receive Shiatsu?
For me, receiving Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing and restorative experience that leaves me feeling grounded, connected, nourished, and better prepared to meet whatever life brings. The theories and philosophies underpinning Shiatsu align well with my values and inform all aspects of my life. Shiatsu teaches me awareness, clarity, and compassion rooting me in the here and now and equipping me with skills to support a healthful and joyful approach to living.
Receiving regular Shiatsu treatments can help to alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and wellbeing. Shiatsu is excellent for relieving tension and calming the mind. It can lift your spirit and have a very positive effect on your mood. By the end of a session receivers often experience an increased sense of vitality whilst at the same time feeling deeply relaxed. You are likely to find you are breathing more deeply and have an increased awareness of your whole person and of factors impacting on your wellbeing. Shiatsu helps people to get on with their lives and to sleep well.

What my clients say:
“Receiving Shiatsu from Liz was an immediate and complete tension release. As I suffer with a menstrual condition which affects me physically and emotionally, I find a monthly shiatsu treatment works really well as part of managing the issue. Liz works very intuitively which I appreciate, and she spends time focussing on what will work well for the individual.” Sherilyn
After first treatment: “I cannot thank you enough!! I am delighted to report that I fell asleep after going to bed at midnight for the first time in over six months, and I have felt a huge improvement in all the little aches and pains I normally feel through being knotted up with tension and anxiety. I feel like a new person today!” After second treatment: “I have had two great nights sleep, I love shiatsu!! Thank you so much for making me feel human again!” Monika
“I was introduced to Shiatsu in my early twenties when I had my first treatment at the Shiatsu training centre in London. I have tried wherever I lived to find a practitioner as I have found the therapy hugely beneficial. I moved to my current location ten years ago and in my first year here I found Liz, she has been over all these years a wonderful practitioner. She is professional, effective and a lovely energy to be with. I highly recommend her.” Janet
“The shiatsu treatments were of immense benefit – often coming at the end of long and demanding working days they provided not only relief from physical symptoms but most importantly generated a real sense of well being. Sessions left me feeling both relaxed and energised. Great care was taken to ensure that shiatsu was given in an environment that conducive to achieving maximum benefit – Liz’s calm, focused and unobtrusive delivery style inspired complete confidence.” Sharon
“At age 70 my wife convinced me to have a Shiatsu massage given by Liz Pavey. I was not sure if this type of massage would suit me but Liz has an amazing ability, through subtle touch and directed massage, to locate and stretch tired muscles and strained sinews to reinvigorate and relax my body and enhance my sense of well-being and create mindfulness. Liz is a true professional who has clearly mastered the art of Shiatsu and I recommend her without reservation, especially for older individuals who (like me) increasingly need to look after themselves both physically and mentally.” Dr Andrew Mellor (Professor Emeritus)

My journey with Shiatsu:
Shiatsu practitioner in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.
I have been practicing Shiatsu since completing my three-year professional training at The Shiatsu College Newcastle in 2009. The work has taken me to many settings including offering Shiatsu at Search, a charity serving older people in the west of Newcastle, for several years.
My commitment to Shiatsu stems from a wider interest health and wellbeing developed during my career as a professional dance artist, choreography and lecturer. The Shiatsu practitioner and contemporary dancer share many goals including ease of movement, presence and awareness, and sensitivity in human contact.
